Ben Ainslie - PALMA
FONTE: VSail.info
[Source: Ben Ainslie] I write this from Palma, where I have been based since finishing the Miami Regatta at the end of January. I’ve spent nearly all my time on the water with training partner Mark Andrews and coach David (Sid) Howlett.
My main focus has been on my fitness but there have been some interesting developments arising from our kit testing. There was a good range of conditions meaning I was able to sail pretty much every day, this enabled us to really test different hulls, masts and sails. When it comes to sail design we use a lot of photographic work and a computer programme which works out things around sail shape, depths and twists in different conditions and circumstances. The Argentine sail designer Juan Garay was in Miami with us and since then he has been working back at home on fine-tuning the sails we are now testing.

I’m slowly getting my weight up for the Finn and although you could always be a bit heavier, I’m not too far off where I want to be now. My sailing fitness is also improving with all the time I’m spending in the boat. As we get closer to the Palma regatta in April my focus will switch more to racing again.
I did manage to get a few days back the UK, where I attended the launch of a new photographic exhibition celebrating the 80th anniversary of the J.P Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race in London. The event brought together a host of past race winners and legends, I’ve done the Round the Island Race a few times but never won, it was great to speak to many past winners! Hearing their stories makes you realise what a hard race it is to win. It’s a great showpiece for sailing and it is a unique opportunity for so many people to get involved. The bulk of people sailing aren’t there to try to win anything they are just out enjoying the day and the fact the race is as long as it is (50 miles) gives them the chance to really settle down and properly work out how the boat is being sailed and the technicalities behind making the boat sail faster and more efficiently.
I also completed a photo shoot for a yet to be announced new sponsor, it’s always a strange experience to complete these shoots, especially when I’m hiking my Finn suspended in the middle of a studio with wind machines and camera’s flashing. However, it was great fun and I’m looking forward to seeing the results.
Next up is the Princess Sofia Regatta in Palma (2-9 April) which is part of the ISAF World Cup, I will have done a lot of training by then so I can’t wait to get out racing.

America's Cup: Swedish team splashes AC45 in Auckland
The third America's Cup team to launch an AC45, Artemis Racing (SWE), splashed their new boat in Auckland's Viaduct Harbour today, Saturday.
The official statement issued by Artemis Racing reads:
Today’s christening of the Artemis Racing AC45 marked an important milestone in the Swedish team’s Challenge for the 34th America’s Cup. The team, together with friends and family, gathered in the Viaduct to officially launch the team’s AC45. Helmsman Terry Hutchinson welcomed everyone and applauded the full team effort to get the Artemis Racing AC45 on the water before Kylie Jameson christened the catamaran.
Hutchinson and the crew left the dock immediately to begin Artemis Racing’s first two-week trial of the wing sailed AC45. Meanwhile back in Valencia, the design team is hard at work under the direction of Principal Designer Juan Kouyoumdjian.
'It’s been all hands on deck for the last couple of weeks in order to get the AC45 ready to sail today. Now it’s time to go sailing. We have an experienced crew in Auckland for this test session and are looking forward to gaining proficiency in sailing this new class of boat,' said Paul Cayard, CEO of Artemis Racing.
Artemis Racing will be evaluating and analysing all aspects of the AC45’s performance over the course of the next two weeks. Also out on the water will be fellow America’s Cup Challenger Emirates Team New Zealand and the Defender, ORACLE Racing who have also taken delivery of their AC45s.
Built by Core Builders in Warkworth (NZ), the AC45 is the pre-cursor to the AC72 catamarans, which will be raced for the Louis Vuitton Cup and the America’s Cup in San Francisco in 2013. The teams will compete in eight America’s Cup World Series regattas with the AC45 between July 2011 and May 2012.
The next regatta for Artemis Racing is the Extreme Sailing Series Regatta in Qingdao, China from 15-17 April.

« Race for Water » 1er MOD70 mis à l’eau

ORACLE Racing first out in the 45
Monday, March 14, 2011
he American ORACLE Racing team became the first America's Cup squad to sail its own AC45 when it went for a short shakedown sail in Auckland on Monday afternoon.
For the first time out, the team was on the water for about 90 minutes, checking systems and ensuring everything on the newly branded AC45 was 'shipshape'. More serious testing and training will take place later this week.
"Today was great, absolutely beautiful. It was really Auckland at it's best today… Perfect moderate nor-easterly, warm t-shirt weather, 12 knots," said Murray Jones, an afterguard member on the team.
"Everything went well, just like clockwork really and the guys have done a great job to get her sailing.
"I think we will go out for another short sail tomorrow, to get a few more things calibrated and then really get into it on Thursday."
Other competitors are expected to join them on the harbor later this week as the first batch of AC45s hit the water.

Yachting NZ announces 2016 Olympic Events submission
Fonte: Sail World
Yachting New Zealand's Board of Directors has this week made a submission to the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) joining in the current discussion among the international yachting community around securing the future of yachting as an Olympic sport.
The submission from Yachting New Zealand (YNZ) comes after the announcement in November 2010 of a provisional Events slate to be considered for inclusion in the 2016 Olympic Games, and also the ISAF adopted Olympic Commission Report – an investigation lead by Phil Jones of Australia which proposed that key changes must be made if yachting is to maintain its place in the Olympic Games.
YNZ believes that the Olympic Games are important to yachting, and holds concerns that the provisional Events slate announced by ISAF late last year doesn't ensure a future for our sport in the Olympic Games.
The submission to ISAF from YNZ was written after wide consultation and discussion in and out of New Zealand. It can be downloaded in full here on the YNZ website, and clearly states the events which YNZ feels should be on the Olympic Events slate and the reasons why.
The YNZ submission proposes that ISAF replaces the Event slate provisionally adopted in November with the following Event slate…
1. Men's Windsurfing – RS:X
2. Women's' Windsurfing – RS:X
3. Men's Single-Handed Dinghy – Laser
4. Women's Single-Handed Dinghy – Laser Radial
5. Men's High Performance Two-Handed Dinghy – 49er
6. Women's High Performance Two-Handed Dinghy – Evaluation Trial
7. Open Multihull – Evaluation Trial
8. Men's High Performance Single-Handed Dinghy – Evaluation Trial (to be suitable for men in the 85kg + weight range)
9. Men's Two-Handed Dinghy – 470
10. Women's Two-Handed Dinghy – 470
'We don't believe that the provisional slate proposed by ISAF last November was in the best interests of the sport, and so we've chosen to promote what we feel is best for yachting, by making this submission to ISAF and publishing it for others to consider,' says Terry Nicholas, Chairman of the YNZ Olympic Committee.
'We reviewed the criteria set out in the Olympic Commission report, and established the Events (not classes) which we believe meet these criteria the closest, using a points system,' Nicholas explains.
YNZ believes that global mass appeal and exciting sailing is critical. Supplied equipment where practical and common hull equipment across more than one event both reduce cost.
YNZ feels that to force mixed gender events is impractical at the Olympic level of the sport and that the overall gender ratios in the YNZ proposed Events slate are in line with global participation in sailing and also in line with other Olympic sports.
YNZ believes that the cost of campaigning Keelboats in the Olympics, the limited access for sailors to compete in Women's Match Racing on the international stage, and costs involved in hosting the keelboat events mean that it is not suited to inclusion in the Olympic Games.
In May this year ISAF Council will make the final decision on the Olympic events slate, and Yachting New Zealand hopes that our submission will promote further discussion and debate among the international yachting community in the weeks leading up to the May meeting.
